TVS diodes are widely used devices in the electronics industry. The diode will act as a bypass to provide current in the reverse Directional Conduction current when the SCR is closed due to thermal effect. This will reduce the peak clamping voltage and short circuit current.

When the transient voltage is removed, the thermal effect will cease and the SCR will turn off. The diode will provide current in the opposite Directional Conduction current to reduce the overshoot voltage, thus providing an additional level of protection.
