1. Describe
Microchip USB2640-HZH-02 is a high-speed hub that complies with the USB 2.0 standard for USB port expansion with an additional mass storage peripheral controller. The controller allows reading/writing of the following series of popular flash media:
- Secure Digital™ (SD)
- Multimedia Card (MMC)
- xD-Picture CardTM (xD)1
- Memory Stick(MS)
USB2640/USB2641 is a fully integrated single-chip solution that provides integrated flash card media reader/writer functions for USB expansion and ultra-high performance operations. The average sustained transfer rate may exceed 35 MB/s2.

6. Detailed overview
Microchip USB2640/USB2641 is an integrated USB 2.0 compatible high-speed hub for USB port expansion, with additional large-capacity only large-capacity storage peripheral controllers. This multi-format flash media controller and USB hub Combo has three downstream ports: one port is dedicated to the internally connected ultra-fast flash media reader and writer and two exposed downstream ports can be used for external peripheral expansion. Microchip USB2640/USB2641 is an ultra-fast, OEM configurable hub controller IC with three downstream ports for Embedded USB solution. USB2640/USB2641 will be connected to the upstream port as a full-speed hub or full-speed/high-speed hub. The hub supports low-speed, full-speed, and high-speed (if operating as a high-speed hub) downstream devices on all enabled downstream ports. All the resistors required on the USB port are integrated into the hub. This includes all series termination resistors on D+ and D– pins and all required pull-down and pull-up resistors on D+ and D– pins. The overcurrent detection input is used for downstream-facing ports with internal pull-up resistors. The USB2640/USB2641 includes programmable features such as:
1. PortMap - which provides flexible port mapping and disable sequences. The downstream ports of a USB2640/USB2641
hub can be reordered or disabled in any sequence to support multiple platform designs with minimum effort. For any port that is disabled, the USB2640/USB2641 automatically reorders the remaining ports to match the USB host controller’s port numbering scheme.
2. PortSwap - which adds per-port programmability to USB differential-pair pin locations. PortSwap allows direct alignment of USB signals (D+/D-) to connectors avoiding uneven trace length or crossing of the USB differential signals on the PCB
3. PHYBoost - which enables four programmable levels of USB signal drive strength in downstream port transceivers.PHYBoost attempts to restore USB signal integrity that has been compromised by system level variables such as poor PCB layout, long cables, etc.
