TVS – Varistors, MOVs (Transient Voltage Suppressor Devices) are used to protect circuits from damage caused by over voltage transients, or voltage spikes. They are devices that act as a circuit breaker between high voltage and low voltage paths to protect the circuit and the equipment contained within it from damage due to overloads or sudden power surges.
V05P14P Application Field and Working Principle
The TVS – Varistors, MOVs mainly used in LED displays and computer boards, are designed to provide improved performance with reliable protection against power supply overvoltages in the range of 5VDC to 14VDC. They feature a 12 dB operational range from 0.4MHz to 30MHz and are capable of providing up to 15A peak pulse current noise protection.
The TVS- Varistors, MOVs are also commonly used in protecting sensitive front end circuits against high-energy spikes. These devices operate by clamping voltage surges quickly and efficiently through the use of a metal oxide varistor (MOV) technology. The MOV, acting as a shunt, allows high energy spikes to be discharged within a few nanoseconds of them occurring, protecting downstream components from physical damage. This device also helps regulate the power supply when it changes suddenly, making sure the system’s voltage does not exceed the manufacturer’s rating.
V05P14P application field and working principle mainly consists of a PTC resistor connected in series with a varistor to protect sensitive signals especially in the wide voltage range of 5V and 14V, making sure the system’s power supply voltage does not exceed the manufacturer’s rating.
The first component in the circuit is the PTC resistor which is normally in series with the application\'s power supply. In an overvoltage situation the PTC will increase its resistance to limit the transient current. The MOV, secondly, will help by clamping the voltage to a safe level while the PTC is still in its overvoltage protection mode.
The MOV also helps to protect the power supply from voltage fluctuation. Since these components respond quickly, they are the ideal protection semiconductor devices for a wide variety of applications, demanding short response times in order to protect the circuit from events such as lightning, static electricity transients, switching transients, and other transients.
TVS- Varistors, MOVs are also used in other applications such as in AC application situations where they can operate at a given voltage level. Such applications include motor start circuits, motor control systems, SMPS and other AC applications.
