The V0603MHS03H is a transient voltage surge suppressor and as one of many products in a complete series, it offers reliable and robust protection bringing state-of-the-art technology to the market. Specifically, this product is a lowcapacitance subminiature Varistor. A varistor, also known as a voltage-dependent resistor (VDR), is an electronic component with electrical properties that vary with the applied voltage. The maximum working voltages of the device is rated at between 6.0V to 60V with the maximum surge rating of 27.5A at 10x1000μs for the typical device.
The operating principle of a varistor is based on the non-linear behavior of a semiconductor diode, or a bi-directional diode, which means that when the voltage applied to it exceeds a certain critical value, the diode will turn on and start to conduct current. The resistance of the diode will then depend on the voltage applied, such that higher voltages lead to lower resistance and vice versa. This non-linear behavior of the device allows it to absorb the energy from a voltage surge, thereby protecting other parts of the circuit from being damaged.
