TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) devices, also known as “Transient Voltage Suppressors” or “Surge Arrestors”, act to protect electronic components and circuitry from damage caused by electrical transients, such as voltage spikes or surges. Varistors, MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors), and their sub-types, can all be classified as TVS products and have been designed for this purpose.The V10E385P is a popular MOV type of transient voltage suppressor that is often used in a variety of applications. It consists of a zinc-oxide varistor element constructed inside a thermally and mechanically stable plastic housing, with two lead terminals providing electrical connection.The V10E385P’s typical application field is the protection against short transients and surge voltages that can arise in electrical installation and power systems. It is particularly well-suited for use as a protection device for data/signal lines against drops or surges in low voltage operations. This includes data transmission circuit boards, digital sequencers, and other low-voltage circuitry components. Due to its wide operating temperature range (-40°C to +85°C with proper derating) and excellent present/absent clamps, the V10E385P can also be used as an additional protection device for both medium and high voltage operations, such as AC/DC switching power supplies, relays and contactors, and automotive systems.The V10E385P operates on the principle of voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs), which are also commonly referred to as varistors. These devices have a non-linear resistance that is very low at normal operating voltage, but increases exponentially when an electrical transient exceeds the varistor’s peak voltage rating. This increase in resistance limits the amount of current allowed to flow, reducing the probability of damage to the protected circuitry.The V10E385P is equipped with a variety of useful features to assist in this task. These include a high nominal leakage current rating of over 500 mA, a clamp voltage of 386 V, and a wide range of capacitance variability from 4.7 to 143 nanofarads (NF). In addition, the device has an UL recognized peak current rating of 10.8 A and a maximum energy rating of 1 joule.The V10E385P has proven to be an extremely reliable protection device for a wide variety of applications. Its robust construction, low leakage current rating, and wide range of capacitance make it an ideal choice for both low and high voltage operations, and its thermally and mechanically stable plastic housing ensures that the device can remain effective in extreme environmental conditions as well.
