The V140LA10A device is a highly integrated forty three million square millimetre automotive transil module which employs large geometry, surface mount technology. It combines Varistor (V) and Metal OXide Varistor (MOV) functions for optimal ESL suppression performance. The integrated transient protection element can diversify the application field, making it suitable for various demanding requirements in automotive, industrial and consumer electronics.
This device combines the non-linear characteristics of a MOV and the fast, highly repeatable response of a Varistor in a single package. The device provides high-energy automotive grade protection, while its high integrated characteristic reduces the component count and improves mounting efficiency. Moreover, its bidirectional function enables bidirectional line protection. The combination of Varistor and MOV as its protection element makes the V140LA10A an optimal combination product.
The basic principle of the V140LA10A operation is that when the line is exposed to a surge above its protection threshold, the metal oxide varistor (MOV) will be triggered and thus the varistor will be activated. MOV is designed to be triggered at a certain voltage, usually having an operating voltage between 15 and 25 volts as the trigger voltage. When the varistor is triggered, it will quickly discharges the high surge energy through its electrical terminals to the ground.
In addition, the device also employs a Varistor, a voltage dependent resistor which acts like a clamp holding the abnormally high voltages and allowing only a safe and allowable voltage to pass on to the electronic circuit. This allows the system to remain out of harm. The Varistor will typically have an operating voltage of 12 volts to 48 volts and will begin to operate when the incoming voltage exceeds this threshold.
