Today we will be discussing the V140LA5 application fields and working principles. V140LA5 is a peak power absorption (PPA) voltage suppressor (or commonly known as transient voltage surge suppressor, or TVS) used to protect electrical and electronic circuits from potential damage. It is part of a type of voltage suppressors called metal oxide varistors (MOVs).

MOVs are usually composed of zinc-oxide crystals, which are made by sintering into discs. MOVs are designed to limit voltages, safeguarding against transients which are spikes greater than a given threshold and lasting less than 1µs. It is a highly reliable combination of Zinc Oxide pellets in a monolithic Multilayer Ceramic Design. When exposed to a voltages exceeding the peak operating voltage, the MOV will clamp the voltage at a set level to protect the circuit from a higher voltage. It is commonly used in power lines, and other industrial, commercial, and residential devices for protection against equipment damage or even fires.

The V140LA5 is a transient voltage surge suppressor with a peak power absorption capacity of 140 watts. It comes in an Axial leaded through-hole package and has an operating temperature range of -55 to +125°C. It has also been rated to meet UL 1449 4th Edition requirements. The V140LA5 is a 14mm radial leaded, 1-pole DC voltage suppressor with a capacitance of 50pF and Max I/O of 250V. Its peak operating voltage is 430V, peak surge voltage is 700V, and peak current rating is 10.2A.

The working principle of V140LA5 involves the screen effect. The varistor has two modes of operation, in normal-mode, when the amount of energy present is of narrower pulse-width, the energy wave moves through the device in two direction. This is what is known as the screen effect, the effect of the energy distribution is that it produces an almost uniform voltage drop across the varistor. During surge or over voltage conditions, the screen effect will cause a greater amount of energy to move from the anode to the cathode of the diode, creating a nearly equalized electric field across the varistor.

When the circuit is open, the device offers a very low impedance path between both the anode and the cathode as the electrostatic field across the varistor region decreases by shortening of the distance between the electrodes. This reduces the electrical potential and the current flowing through the device. When the voltage is higher than the peak voltage, the MOV begins to clamp the voltage at a set level. The varistor also acts as a capacitor and the two states will act to reduce the voltage across the device.
