A Varistor, also known as a Voltage Dependent Resistor or a Variably Resistive Device, is a component that is used to protect circuits from overvoltage or short-circuit conditions. The V140LT20APX2855 is an electronically-reprogrammable Varistor and Transient Voltage Suppression device with low leakage current. It is designed to provide high-reliability protection against electrical transients caused by lightning, electrostatic discharge, and similar voltage surges or spikes. It is rated for 175V AC, 42V DC. It has a high surge current rating of 140A (8/20µs) with good energy absorption characteristics. The V140LT20APX2855’s working principle works by using specialized Voltage Dependent Resistor (VDR) technology. As the transient voltage exceeds its trip point, the VDR turns on and conducts a large current, thus limiting the voltage across the line. This process is known as switching and is able to absorb up to 140A (8/20µs) of energy. It then clamps the voltage to a safe level and diverts the energy away from the protected circuit. After the surge has passed, the device returns to its original state. This total switch time is generally within 0.3µs.
