TVS (transient voltage suppressors) are components used to protect sensitive electronics from voltage spikes. A common type of TVS is the varistor, which is a form of resistor that changes its resistance depending on the amount of voltage applied. MOVs (metal oxide varistors) are also used to regulate voltage, but unlike a varistor, an MOV does not have a fixed resistance-voltage (R-V) curve. V140LT5 is a Varistor series designed for Home Appliances, Industrial, Telecom, Computer, Office Equipment and Automotive markets. It is a molded type with internal electrodes, UL recognized, providing fast response to transients by decreasing the resistance in response to too high voltage pulses or surges being applied to it.

V140LT5 provides excellent bidirectional protection to circuits against overvoltages; it also allows an optimized absorption of high voltage pulses. V140LT5 are available in 5 different voltages, 5mm x 11mm outline and offer very low capacitance and leakage current.

The working principle of V140LT5 is the same as that of other varistor. It consists of two layers of different materials which form a junction. The layer with the higher resistance is called the ‘forward’ material and the layer with the lower resistance is called the ‘reverse’ material. When no voltage is applied, the varistor is nonconductive. When voltage is applied, it causes the forward material to become conductive, thus allowing easier flow of electrons through the varistor. The amount of current that can flow though the varistor depends on the amount of voltage applied.
