This resistance is of a high ordering power to prevent large currents coming from the transient source from passing through the device and potentially destroying other connected components.

This triggers the conduction of electrons from the source into the protection device, reducing the voltage at the point of conduction. When the voltage drops below the previously established level, the device automatically resets itself, so that no damage is caused to the other connected components in a circuit.
