TVS-Varistors, MOVs are devices designed to protect electronic devices from voltage transients caused by electrostatic discharges or power surges.
The V18MLA1210LA is a two line, high voltage, bidirectional transient voltage suppressor designed to protect against voltage transients up to 1,000 volts.
The device’s large bonding area and copper backing create a robust contact with excellent heat dissipation. The low profile design provides for increased board space and convenient placement in low profile applications. The device utilizes the Multi-Line Array (MLA) topology which employs multiple terminations to which the user is able to customize by leaving the terminal unpopulated. The V18MLA1210LA has an operating DC voltage of 18 volts and is rated for a maximum peak surge current of 10 Amps.
This device can be used in a variety of applications such as power supplies, telecommunications, in-vehicle applications, signal lines, motor control lines and audio lines. Its application field also covers circuit protection for AC power lines and DC power lines.
The working principle of the V18MLA1210LA is simple. It utilizes a metal oxide varistor (MOV) to regulate the voltage and current passing through the device. When the device senses an increase in voltage, it increases its resistance, thus restricting the flow of current and saving downstream components from damage.
During a transient event, the MOV is designed to break down and reduce its resistance, therefore allowing current to pass through. When the voltage returns to normal, the MOV re-establishes its operating resistance automatically and is ready for the next event.
The V18MLA1210LA also features a positive temperature coefficient design which helps reduce the risk of over-surge and protects against short circuits and over-heating.
