TVS - Varistors, MOVsVaristors, also known as transient voltage suppressors (TVSs), are components used to protect electronic circuitry from high voltages. These components are designed to absorb, store, and then dissipate undesired voltage transients or lightning strikes quickly and safely. Varistors are also able to block higher voltage in one direction, while passing low voltage in the opposite direction. Therefore, they can be used as protection against surges, lightning surges and overvoltages, in a variety of applications such as industrial equipment, home appliances, electrical systems, automotive, and communication products.
Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are a type of varistor that uses a oxide-semiconductor material to protect circuits against overvoltage conditions. MOVs are designed with an anode and cathode region between which a zinc oxide-based material is sandwiched. They are typically composed of two metal plates with a non-conductive material inserted between them, to form a junction. Under normal conditions, the zinc oxide material remains in a state of non-conductivity, with a very low resistance barrier. When a high voltage surge is detected, the material quickly switches to a lower resistance state, allowing the MOVs to act as a short and dampen any excessive voltage.
V18ZS40P Application Field and Working Principle
The V18ZS40P Varistor is a ultra-low leakage device, designed to safely protect circuits from high transient voltages and overvoltage conditions. This varistor is a metal oxide varistor with a Zinc Oxide (ZnO) junction material. With a wide operating range, V18ZS40P provides 18mm of suppression, an operating voltage up to 400VAC and an industry-standard 40mm gap between pins. The varistor also has a high surge current rating of 6500A (8/20μs peak pulse current), making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Its low leakage feature makes it suitable for use in communication applications, as it will not draw an excessive amount of current when under normal operating conditions. The operation of the MOV is based on the principle of zener diode breakdown. When the applied voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage, the MOV operates in a conductive state, allowing for a significant flow of current until the voltage drops below the breakdown point.
