TVS–Varistors, MOVs (metal oxide varistors) are protective devices used to suppress surges and transients caused by lightning, power cross connection and other electrical disturbances. A V20H17P is a type of transient voltage suppressor which provides effective protection from transients and over-voltage in many applications. The V20H17P is designed to provide the best combination of low leakage current, fast response, low capacitance, and excellent clamping performance as compared to other MOVs.

The application fields for the V20H17P include high-speed data line and LED power supply protection, such as in telecom industry, mobile device industry, data centers, enterprise networks and military applications. It can also be used to protect circuits in automobile industry, medical and industrial equipment, building automation, electrical and electronic systems, as well as critical control circuits and power supply circuits.

The working principle of the V20H17P is based on the semiconductor diode junction. When the voltage of the protected system reaches the varistor’s breakdown voltage, the diode junction starts to conduct and the voltage across the device is clamped to a safe level. During a transient or surge event, the device is able to develop an extremely high conducting current, which quickly brings the voltage back to its nominal level. If the duration of the transient exceeds the device’s clamping time, a reverse voltage may occur.

The V20H17P is protected by a reversible thermal fuse, which eliminates the need for fuse application in the circuit and allows for a maximum surge current rating of 500A (8/20µs). It features a low leakage current (18mA max. @ 7V) and fast rise and fall time of less than 0.1µs. The varistor is suitable for operating temperature range from -40 to +85°C, and has a high 85V dc working voltage.
