Varistors, also known as voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs) are nonlinear, electro-mechanical devices that have a highly non-linear current-voltage characteristic. They are widely used in various applications such as surge and spike protection, filters, and damping applications. TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) devices are used to protect against overvoltage transients caused by electrical noise, various electrical and mechanical sources, and/or electrostatic discharges (ESDs). The V230LC4 is a MOV/TVS type device used in surge protection applications. This article will discuss the application field and working principle of the V230LC4.
Appication field
The V230LC4 is a radial leaded Varistor (MOV) designed for overvoltage protection of electronic systems. It is suitable for use in a wide variety of applications, such as power supplies, data links, telecom equipment, medical equipment, consumer equipment, and industrial control systems. The device is UL listed and is RoHS compliant.
The V230LC4 provides robust transient protection and excellent clamping capability, with a surge current rating of 13.3Amps (8x20μs) for > 0.50Ω lead resistance. It is designed with low capacitance and high surge current to ensure low clamping voltage, superior clamping performance, and excellent noise immunity. The AC voltage rating of the device is 250Vrms, and it has a peak pulse power rating of 400W.
The V230LC4 is available in three different packages - a 5.25mm diameter package, a 5.0mm diameter package, and a 3.5mm diameter package. The 5.25mm package is UL recognized and complies with surge protection standards UL1449 and UL497. The 5.0mm and 3.5mm packages are also UL recognized for voltage transient protection standards UL60950-1, UL1449, and UL497.
Working Principle
Varistors work on the principle of Nonlinear Voltage Resistance (NLVR). When a varistor is placed across a circuit, it will behave like any other resistor and have a linear I-V curve. However, when the voltage across the device exceeds its specified threshold voltage, its resistance will start to decrease rapidly. This phenomenon is called the nonlinear resistance effect. NLVR is a result of the nonuniform doping of the semiconductor material forming the device.
The working of the V230LC4 can be understood with the help of the following circuit diagram:

Here, the device is connected from the input power source to ground. When the input voltage is below the specified threshold voltage, the device will behave as an open circuit and thus not allow any current to flow. However, when the input voltage exceeds the specified threshold voltage, the device will start to conduct current and divert it from the power source to ground, thus reducing the output voltage and protecting the circuit from overvoltage.
The V230LC4 also offers low capacitance and internal damping to reduce system ringing for better noise protection and transient response. This device is suitable for use in applications such as telecom, utility metering, instrumentation, and automotive. It is an ideal solution for circuit protection in low voltage (< 250V) applications.
