TVS - Varistors, MOVs, includes a wide range of devices. One of which is the V275LS10. The V275LS10 applications field and working principle will be discussed in this article.

The V275LS10 is a semiconductor part of the TVS-Varistor family. It has a thermally stable, 275V, 3 element, SMD type package. The term “V” stands for Varistor, and “LS10” for the specific SMD package size. The V275LS10 looks like a small disc on closer inspection.

The V275LS10’s applications field is relatively wide. It is used to protect AC and DC signals by suppressing transients and noise. In AC power supplies, it converts wide noise pulses into uniform AC line interference, maintaining the original signal waveform. Moreover, it is used in AC and DC modules and automotive electronic circuitry for surge protection. In solar energy, it provides protection against transients, resulting from high-voltage events like cloud cover. The V275LS10 is used as part of appliances, such as air conditioners and washing machines, to suppress EMI and ESD.

The working principle of the V275LS10 is based on the well-known concept of voltage-dependent resistance: it offers a resistance that varies with the applied voltage. In the presence of an overvoltage, a voltage breakdown occurs, and a significant decrease in resistance is observed. The voltage below which breakdown occurs, for the V275LS10, is 275V. As the breakdown voltage is reached, the current behavior changes from nonlinear (passive) to linear (active), as the device shorts out the applied voltage.

When the device is exposed to a surge or transient, the breakdown voltage is reached and the varistor switches to an active linear state. This reduces the available voltage across the V275LS10, quickly clamping the overvoltage to the breakdown voltage level, and allowing a safe amount of current to flow, thereby protecting the connected components. When the surge or transient is over, the device quickly resets itself and returns to the passive nonlinear state.

When the V275LS10 is used together with other components, like fuses and diodes, it can create a circuit that provides protection against Multiple Impulse Environment (MIL-STD 883E method 3015.7). This combination of components will allow the same circuit to provide protection against strong transients such as lightning and high voltage spikes associated with AC and DC power supplies.
