This threshold voltage is known as the “breakdown voltage” of the varistor. When the applied voltage is below the breakdown voltage, the varistor exhibits a linear behavior, like a normally closed circuit. So the varistor can protect any circuit from overvoltage, EMI (electromagnetic interference) and other electrical transients.
