A varistor, also known as a voltage-dependent resistor (VDR), is a two-terminal electronic component with nonlinear, temperature-independent resistance which varies depending on the applied voltage. When a certain voltage is exceeded, the varistor conducts current to protect the circuit. Varistors are commonly used as transient voltage suppressors (TVS). One of the most popular varistors, V321HC40, has a wide range of application fields, and a working voltage of 230V AC.

V321HC40 is an industrial-grade across-the-line surge suppressor for residential, commercial and industrial power distribution systems. It is designed to protect both connected loads and the power supply system itself from transients which can surge through the power lines. It is also designed to provide secondary surge protection on individual circuits in a system.

V321HC40 is made up of an enclosed steel plate containing several zinc-oxide disclike elements that are connected in parallel with a steel core.
