Television surge suppressors (TVS) are made of a variety of materials such as zinc oxide varistors, metal oxide varistors (MOVs), silicon controlled rectifiers, etc., that protect against electrical surges or spikes in electronic circuits. The V321HF34 TVS is a zinc oxide varistor with a unique clamping voltage response. It is designed to protect sensitive electronic components from high voltage instantaneous changes.

The V321HF34 is a bi-directional, symmetrical, radial leaded television surge suppressor. It can be used for multiple applications including data line, industrial, automotive, telecommunications, consumer electronic, audio/video, computing and instrumentation. The device is also applicable in entry-level power, television broadcast and power conditioning. It offers a high surge capability up to 500 VPEAK and up to 20 A peak. The V321HF34 also features a small size, a wide operating temperature range, a wide operational frequency range and a high volume resistance.

As all varistors, the V321HF34 works by diverting the excessive charge away from the protected equipment. The high current surge is limited by the device’s series resistance, which is the natural resistance of the material from which it is made. When the V321HF34 is subject to a large surge, the voltage-clamping action of the device diverts the charge away from the protected device, providing the desired protection.

The V321HF34 is also designed with a high rated energy. When the surge voltage is above the rated breakdown voltage, the V321HF34 absorbs the excessive energy, dissipates it, and clamps the voltage at a predetermined maximum value. This prevents the voltage from exceeding the specified upper clamping voltage and protects the attached equipment from the surge. The voltage is clamped when the second series resistance comes into action. During the second series resistance, the varistor either absorbs, dissipates, or shorts the excess energy.

The V321HF34 also features backlash protection and surge protection. Backlash protection prevents the propagation of electrical spikes and vibrations that could damage the connected electronics. Surge protection helps to protect against electrostatic discharge, lightning surges, and other transient voltage levels that can cause damage or malfunction of the protected electronic equipment.
