V33ZU05PX2855 Working Principle

The operating principle of a V33ZU05PX2855 MOV is based on resistance-capacitance (RC) model in which the varistor element acts as a voltage-dependent resistor. The varistor element is composed of sintered granular particles that are composed of zinc oxide and other metal oxides. The transients voltage events cause the MOV’s grain boundaries to be activated, allowing conduction of current through the element.

When a transient voltage event occurs, the grains of zinc oxide get polarized rapidly up to the clamp voltage, V_C. This ensures that the current conduction through the element is limited to the V_C. As the transient voltage event subsides, the grains of the erstwhile polarized granules return to their initial non-polarized state. This process is known as “self- regeneration”; it ensures that the varistor element can be used repeatedly during successive transient events.

V33ZU05PX2855 MOVs also have over-voltage protection mechanisms that protect the device from high-frequency, high-energy voltage spikes. These mechanisms ensure that the MOV will not be destroyed during extreme transient events, such as a lightning strike, and additionally prevent the zener effect which can cause prolonged stress to the voltage source.
