TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes, such as the V390RA22, are devices specifically designed to prevent voltage transients from damaging sensitive electronic components. TVS diodes, also commonly referred to as Transil or Transient Voltage Protectors, protect the vulnerable parts of your system from overvoltage events by clamping the voltage to a level below damaging thresholds. It is fabricated using a silicon avalanche technology with high PSOCTH values and low breakdown voltage. This device is an ideal solution for low-power applications such as personal computers, telecommunications equipment, consumer electronics and industrial electronics.The V390RA22 works on the principle of a zener diode, where a reverse-biased zener diode is used to regulate voltage. When the reverse bias voltage exceeds the zener breakdown voltage, electrons are emitted from the zener region and are subsequently accelerated through the junction. This process results in an avalanche (or zener) breakdown, with the result that a large current can then flow through the diode. At this point, the diode acts as a high power resistor and the voltage is clamped at the breakdown voltage, thus protecting the components it is connected to.The V390RA22 offers several advantages over other transient voltage suppressors. It is designed to have a very low capacitance, making it suitable for high-speed applications. It also features a wide operating range, with an operating temperature range of -55 ˚C to 125 ˚C and a wide operating voltage range of 8V to 500V. Additionally, the V390RA22 has an industry-leading response time of less than 10ns and a maximum surge current rating of 5A.
