TVS – Varistors, MOVs are important devices used in the electronic industry today. They are effective for providing protection from transient overvoltages. The V460LA7 is one such device which is incorporated in systems to provide effective protection.
The V460LA7 is a Transient Voltage Suppression Device (TVS) or a thyristor. It is in use in the electronic industry because it has a wide voltage range, covers from 9V to 440V. It has low capacitance, providing low clamping ratio. This makes it suitable for high speed circuit protection. It is most suitable for application with high performance circuits and those with higher voltage such as USB ports, TVS Diode, DSL line protections, I/O Port protection etc.
Its working principle is based on the principle of controlled avalanche diode. It consists of a PN junction, which usually is present in most of the semiconductor materials such as silicon. Under normal conditions, it does not allow any electric current to flow from its anode to its cathode. But when a high voltage is applied across the PN junction, it creates an avalanche effect which causes the flow of electric current from anode to cathode. That is why it is called an avalanche diode.
The V460LA7 includes a trigger which ensures that the avalanche effect is back to the normal level quickly. It also features an inhibit pin feature which provides more control on the avalanche effect by acting on the voltage applied to the trigger. It is used to inhibit the avalanche effect when the applied voltage is too high. This gives a quick response during the application of overvoltage and helps to reduce the chances of damage due to overvoltage.
The V460LA7 has numerous advantages that make it suitable for higher performance applications. Firstly, it gets dissipates up to 30 amperes of surge current. Secondly, it can be triggered from 1.15V up to 25V. Thirdly, it provides high-speed clamping behaviour, thus providing a better protection against transient overvoltages and ESD. Its working principle also ensures that it quickly switches down after the protective effects, thus making it ideal for use in low voltage applications as well.
