The V460LU40BPX2855 is an application-specific surge current protection device designed to protect sensitive circuits from overvoltage transients, commonly known as transients or electrical spikes. In order to provide effective protection, these devices must be able to accommodate large peak currents while still ensuing reliable operation and fast response times.The Varistor is a voltage-dependent nonlinear resistor that limits overvoltage transients by providing a low impedance path to ground for the transient and quickly dissipating it into the ground. The MOV, on the other hand, is an integrated circuit that contains metal oxide varistors connected in series and parallel, providing a larger surface area and therefore a greater current handling capability. As the voltage increases, the MOV will conduct current, thereby limiting the transient voltage.The V460LU40BPX2855 uses both the varistor technology and the MOV technology to provide effective overvoltage protection. The device consists of four independent protection components, each containing a MOV and two varistors connected in series, providing twice the surface area of a conventional MOV device. The device also features a parasitic diode to provide an additional layer of protection.When a transient voltage spike exceeds the surge current protection of the device, the MOV will be first triggered into conduction, and then the two series-connected varistors will begin to conduct to protect the device from further overvoltage. When the voltage exceeds the maximum withstand voltage rating, the varistors will begin to trip, replacing the current to ground while the MOV maintains its low-impedance path.
