TVS varistors, which are also known as transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS) or transient voltage suppressors (TVS), are electrical components specially designed to protect sensitive electronic circuits from sudden voltage spikes and to regulate voltage levels that exceed the operation range of the related devices. MOVs, or metal-oxide varistors, are another type of device in the same category. They protect against overvoltage and undervoltage conditions.

The V47ZC3, manufactured by Littelfuse, is a two terminal silicon TVS diode which is designed for use in applications such as automotive, lighting, industrial and vending machines. It is an ideal general-purpose device for protecting finished systems, subassemblies, and small circuit boards from overvoltage transients and surges.

The V47ZC3 is designed with a Zener voltage of 47 Volts and a clamping voltage of 65 Volts, and provides excellent overvoltage protection with a peak pulse power dissipation of 400 Watts. It also has very low dynamic resistance and low leakage current. It has an advanced internal thermal design for efficient operation up to 175°C in typical automotive applications.

The V47ZC3 is aimed at applications with long mating times or high surge voltage. It is available in a resin over-moulded version which adds further protection against moisture and vibration.

When a transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the V47ZC3, the device acts like a short circuit and quickly redirects the voltage away from the system.

The working principle of the V47ZC3 is based on the Zener-breakdown principle. The Zener-breakdown principle states that when a reverse voltage is applied to a rectifying diode or semiconductor junction, a large reverse current flows through the junction in a very short period of time if the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the junction. The V47ZC3 is designed to be triggered at 47V, and will quickly redirect the surge energy away from the system.

The V47ZC3 has multiple benefits, including low dynamic resistance, low leakage current, low capacitance, high ESD protection (up to 40A), and excellent thermal performance.
