TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors)

Transient Voltage Suppressors, or TVS, are protective components used during surges caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), lightning strikes, or inductive switching, preventing electrical appliances and circuit boards from damage. Use of a TVS in an electronic system effectively dissipates transient voltage to its reference ground as heat continues to accumulate until the voltage returns to a normal level. TVS Diodes such as the V625LA80CPX2855, for instance, are a type of semi-conductor device that limits overvoltage transients in peak pulse according to their nonlinear resistance characteristics.

The working principle of TVS involves a junction breakdown phenomenon which occurs due to exceeding a certain applied voltage at the junction point. When the applied voltage becomes high enough, avalanche breakdown process occurs in the varistors, causing it to suddenly increase its conductivity. This allows the current to pass through the varistor and is discharged to the ground.

MOVs work similarly to TVS by providing overvoltage protection for electrical and electronic systems. The V625LA80CPX2855 is equipped with a large metal oxide junction which allows it to rapidly dissipate large amounts of surge energy to the ground. This ensures that the system and device is protected from high surge voltages.

The V625LA80CPX2855 is capable of preventing AC line voltage from being affected by transient surges by providing a low impedance path to ground during transients, while allowing higher impedance paths for AC signals.

The working principle of capacitor leakage suppressors is to pass high frequency AC signals through the capacitor, while absorbing any transient surge. The inductor provides a magnetic field, causing any high voltage transients to be grounded instead of passing through the capacitor. This ensures that critical components and circuit boards are protected from damage caused by surges.
