The VC06LC18X500DP is yet another variety in the broad range of surge protection devices or SPDs available today. It is a Varistor – MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor – Metal Oxide Varistor) type of SPD. The VC06LC18X500DP is designed for protecting 24 Volt DC (Direct Current) load circuits from excessive overvoltage and reverse transients. It is suitable for use in high noise environments, for it has an excellent transient suppression capability.
Varistors (also known as voltage-dependent resistors or VDRs) are an important type of electronic component which can be used for surge protection. This type of electronic component is composed of metal-oxide discs; the oxide of some type of metal, especially zinc, is sandwiched between two electrodes. The metal-oxide discs can be configured in various shapes and sizes to obtain different electrical characteristics. The VC06LC18X500DP is designed with the most suitable properties for 24V DC applications. The discs are designed with a low-carbon zinc (Zn) material, allowing the VC06LC18X500DP to achieve a good ESD level protection.
The VC06LC18X500DP is designed to a high insulation resistance, meaning that it is able to with stand environments with higher than normal levels of electric noise. It has excellent surge current handling capabilities, with a maximum surge current of 500A and an 8/20μVaristor voltage of 630V. This surge current handling capability is further improved due to its high dielectric strength of 30V (DC) per mm. This allows the device to be used in higher surge current applications.
The working principle of the VC06LC18X500DP is based on the characteristic properties of Varistors, which are sensitive to voltage levels. The VC06LC18X500DP protects equipment from excessive surges by acting as a voltage clamp. As the voltage increases across the device, its resistance to current flow drastically increases.
