The VCNL3020X01-GS18 (VCNL3020X01) is an ambient light and IR/UV (infrared/ultraviolet) sensor that combines several sensing technologies into one single package the size of a coin. The device is primarily designed for mobile phone, wrist-wearable, tablet, notebook and other small form factor applications in order to monitor the ambient light and color temperature as well as the presence of environmental UV and/or IR sources.The VCNL3020X01 contains an ambient light sensor (ALS), an ultraviolet (UV) sensor, and an infrared (IR) LED. The ALS includes a visible light photodiode and an IR photodiode, which enables the VCNL3020X01 to measure both visible light intensity in the range from 0 – 4,000 lux and ambient IR light intensity in the range from 0 – 3,000 lux. The IR LED is used as the light source for either proximity sensing or UV sensing applications. For UV sensing, the UV sensor can detect UV light from 380nm to 320nm with 0.25mW/m² accuracy.The device has a wide dynamic sensing range, which means that it can measure both low and high light levels. It also has an integrated high accuracy voltage reference, which enhances the accuracy of the device. It also has a low power consumption feature, which makes it suitable for low power applications.In terms of operation, the user can choose between two different measurement modes: “one-shot” mode and continuous measurement mode.
