The Variable Length Coding (VLC) is a widely used technique in many branches of engineering including communication engineering, signal processing and network management. VLC utilizes the special properties of the code length which are not identical. VLC is capable of applying variable length coding frames for code word representation, and in this way, efficient coding and optimal utilization of the channel capacity can be achieved. VLC was first introduced by John D. Louo and W. Fung in 1970.

VL-2 Application Field and Working Principle

VL-2 is an advanced version of the variable length coding scheme which is mainly used in audio and video data compression and storage in order to achieve high compression ratios. VL-2 can be applied to stream video, MPEG audio, and other multimedia applications. The VL-2 technique utilizes the fact that most video frames contain more zeros than ones, and thus, can exploit this property and compress the input data stream. The general principles of VL-2 are quite simple. Instead of encoding the length of a code word as a single fixed binary word, VL-2 can encode the length of a code word, as a sequence of multiple bits. VL-2 also assigns values to the blocks, where one block corresponds to the symbol and the second block corresponds to the code length. An additional block is used to signify the beginning and the ending of the sequence.The input data stream is divided into different N-bit blocks and a Huffman coding scheme is used to encode each block. A code length table is then constructed which indicates how many bits are assigned to each code given its value. Since N-bit blocks are used, there is a limit on the length of the code, i.e., the maximum code length must be less than or equal to N.

Advantages of VL-2

VL-2 offers numerous advantages over the existing VLC coding schemes. Firstly, it is capable of achieving higher levels of compression than traditional VLC schemes. Secondly, since it uses two-dimensional code length tables, it is less memory intensive and can save storage space. Thirdly, it allows for the efficient decoding process and the need for e-bible scheme is eliminated, thus increasing the speed of communication. Finally, VL-2 is less error-prone as compared to other VLCs which often cause data transmission errors.
