Diodes - Zener - SingleThe VLZ16-GS08 is a single zener diode primarily intended for use in low noise, low current and small power applications. It is a three layer bipolar device characterized by its low leakage current and low thermal emitter efficiency. It is constructed using a specialized non-single polysilicon process and has a wide range of features that make it extremely versatile. In addition, it is comprised of a pure aluminum alloy, has a reverse breakdown voltage of 5.2 volts, a maximum power rating of 25 watts and a maximum temperature rating of 175°C.The VLZ16-GS08 is most commonly used for a variety of high speed pulse applications, as well as in high voltage applications, low voltage DC applications and low noise RF/microwave applications. It is also used for voltage-sensitive switching, for protection against overvoltage, for operation of high reliability DC-DC converters, for pulse forming and for noise reduction.In its basic form, the VLZ16-GS08 consists of a two-lead device with a common cathode terminal and a separate anode terminal. Its rectangular structure has an inside dimension of 0.2mm and its standard size is rated at 1–5 watts. To improve power dissipation, the device is also packaged in an industry standard, thermally enhanced package with a current rating of up to 25 watts.When used in these applications, the VLZ16-GS08 acts as an electrical resistor that limits voltage or current in a circuit or provides an exact voltage reference by allowing controlled current to flow through it in only one direction. This is referred to as a Zener diode. It is essentially a one-way valve that prevents a higher voltage than its specified rating to pass through it, while allowing current to flow in the opposite direction. In addition to providing a precise reference voltage, it can be used to limit peak current in a circuit, stabilize a voltage, provide overvoltage protection and even reverse polarity protection.When the voltage across the diode exceeds its Zener voltage, the reverse breakdown occurs, allowing a controlled current to flow through it. This then limits the voltage across the diode and any additional voltage is prevented from flowing. The breakdown voltage of the diode is usually defined as the point at which the reverse current flow reaches a specified maximum level. The device\'s power rating is determined by the amount of current allowed through it under these conditions.When used in high speed applications, the VLZ16-GS08 is ideal as its low capacitance ensures superior RF/microwave performance. It also offers good thermal stability and long term reliability, making it suitable for long-term operation.
