VNQ810M-E Application Field and Working Principle

The VNQ810M-E is a high performance, low quiescent current, low-dropout linear regulator capable of delivering up to 8A of continuous output current. It is suitable for powering microprocessors and logic from a wide range of input voltages. It features a wide input voltage range and a low quiescent current of only 20mA. It is rated for an output voltage range of 1.25V to 6V and is available in both through hole and surface mount packages.

VNQ810M-E is a device used for power distribution switches, load drivers, voltage regulators and other power management applications. It has a low dropout voltage (<0.3V at 8A) and tight line/load regulation that is guaranteed over the whole input voltage and output current range. It offers fast transient response to reduce output voltage ripple. This feature makes VNQ810M-E well suited for demanding applications such as high resolution displays and audio amplifiers. Its wide input voltage range and low quiescent current make it ideal for battery powered applications.

The working principle of VNQ810M-E is similar to that of other linear regulators, in that it maintains a constant output voltage (V) over its output current (I) range by controlling the on-resistance of a series PMOS pass transistor located between the input and output of the regulator. The output voltage is determined by a voltage divider which can be programmed by external resistors to set the desired output voltage. An internal reference voltage provides a stable reference that keeps the output voltage constant over changes in device temperature. This reference is created by the bandgap circuit, which tunes the output voltage to a precise voltage.

To operate VNQ810M-E, each of its conditions must be set up first. The output voltage (VOUT) is determined by two external resistors connected to the adjustment pin (ADJ). VNQ810M-E also has an enable pin (EN) that can be used to tri-state the output and power down the device. The enable pin is internally pulled up to VIN, so the output can be enabled by pulling the enable pin low. Optionally, the enable pin can be pulled high if the output is always on. The regulation cycle is initiated by the regulator when the input voltage (VIN) is higher than the output voltage (VOUT) and by pulling the enable pin low or high according to the designed configuration.
