Thyristors are semi-conductor switching devices, primarily used as switches to control power. Thyristors are also known as solid state relays, switches, or silicon controlled switches (SCSs). The term thyristor is derived from a combination of the Greek words thyrsos and stor, meaning “flowing control."The VSKT230-18 is a three-terminal thyristor module, 10A, with voltage blocking capability up to 800V. It features fast turn-on, low thermal resistance, and superior EMI/RFI and surge handling characteristics. It is commonly used in applications such as motor control and power tools, lighting control, measurement and data acquisition and process control.
Working Principle
The thyristor module has three main terminals: anode, cathode, and gate. It is considered a three-terminal switch because its gate terminal is used to control current flow between the anode and cathode terminals. When a voltage signal is applied to the gate terminal (with the polarity appropriate to create a forward biasing of the anode-cathode junction), the thyristor switches from its blocking state to its conducting state.At this stage, the current flows freely from the anode to the cathode and the thyristor module is in ON state. If a reverse polarity signal is applied on the gate terminal, then the conduction path is reversed and the thyristor module switches back to the blocking state. It should be noted that once the thyristor is switched from blocking to conducting, no gate signal is necessary to maintain the conduction.The working principle of a thyristor module’s switching operation is similar to that of a p-n junction diode. What sets the thyristor module apart from a diode is that it enables the user to control the timing and amount of power delivered. This is achieved by applying a voltage signal to the gate terminal.Applications
VSKT230-18 thyristor modules are used in various applications including motor control, lighting control, measurement, process control and data acquisition. In motor control applications, the module can be used to control the speed and torque of the motor. This is achieved by adjusting the voltage applied to the gate terminal of the module. For example, a higher gate voltage will make the motor run at a higher speed while a lower gate voltage will slow down the motor speed.In lighting control applications, the thyristor module can be used to regulate the brightness level of LED lamps or other lighting devices.
