W25P20VSNIG Application Field and Working Principle

W25P20VSNIG is a 2.7V-3.6V Serial Flash Memory device, which is designed for use in general purpose system applications requiring enhanced performance, low power and low-voltage operations. This device uses industry-standard (SPI) 4-wire Serial Interface, which can provide a very high clock frequency up to 104MHz, providing higher data transmission speed than the SPI 3-wire and I2C Series. It has 20 pins, with a density of 2Mbit. The chip also has a wide range of features, such as sector and block protection, data continuity and error-correction capability.

The W25P20VSNIG is mainly used for non-volatile memory applications such as digital image capture and image storage. Working Principle

The W25P20VSNIG enables a high speed serial communication interface, by supporting SPI and Microwire(2- or 3-wire Serial Interface) communication protocol, which can achieve a clock speed of up to 104MHz. SPI is a synchronous serial communication protocol which uses four signals, Serial Clock (SCLK), Chip Select (CS), Serial Data In (SI) and Serial Data Out (SO). The data is always transmitted in an MSB (Most Significant Bit) first format. The Microwire Serial Interface is a 3-wire serial bus which uses one control signal and two data signals, the SCLK and SI for data input, and the CS and SO for data output. When the CS line is pulled low, it selects the command/data exchange and controls the data transmission and receiving. The Microwire Serial interface can also support a clock speed of up to 104MHz.

The W25P20VSNIG offers sector protection, block protection and data protection. The sector protection prevents data in the selected sector or the entire device from being modified or erased, while the data protection prevents data lost caused by accidental power reset, sudden power drop or other factors. The device also has a special error correction coding algorithm. This algorithm uses Hamming code to detect and correct bit errors, to achieve a high data integrity. The W25P20VSNIG also has a write-inhibit feature, which prevents the user from modifying or erasing the data.
