The WM8782ASEDS/RV (WM8782) is a high-performance analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital-to-analog converter (DAC) designed specifically for data acquisition, real-time streaming and audio/voice applications. It is a versatile solution for measurement, monitoring, streaming and decoding applications, and is especially suitable for recording and playback applications such as music, audio, and multimedia. Designed to operate from a single power supply, the WM8782 provides an ideal solution for the industrial and scientific markets.
WM8782 is a single-channel AD/DA converter which works both as an ADC or DAC depending upon the application. It contains two identical 16-Bit Sigma-Delta (ΔΣ) modulators that converts the analog signal into a high-speed digital output. Each modulator includes a noise shaper, low-pass filter and decimation filter. The modulators are implemented for both the Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog conversions in the same chip, ensuring a high level of integration and cost-effectiveness. The modulators use an advanced noise-canceling architecture with over-sampling and signal conditioning, which helps to reduce noises and outliers in the signal, thereby providing accurate signal conversion.
In Digital-to-Analog conversion, WM8782 converts digital bits into equivalent analog signal. The digital data are converted into analog voltage with the help of Delta Sigma Modulator’s. The analog voltage is again low-pass filtered and decimated to output the desired frequency data with low noise. The converter provides 16-bit linearity with 0.005 dB step size. It has output signal level range from 0.25 Vpp to 4 Vpp.
In Analog-to-Digital conversion, the ADC input signal is amplified, filtered, and compared against a reference voltage. The ADC then converts the analog signal into 16-Bit data words. The modulators also perform over-sampling and noise-shaping, which reduces the effect of noise and outliers in the analog signal. The Analog-to-Digital portion of the WM8782 achieves an exceptionally low noise floor, eliminating the need to external components such as pre-amplifiers.
The WM8782 offers a power-efficient operational range between 2.7V and 4V and provides a stereo output in both single-ended (unbalanced) and differential (balanced) configurations. It also has a selectable low-pass filter and soft mute output. This provides excellent sound quality, dynamic range and flat frequency response with minimal distortion. In addition, the WM8782 supports digital volume control and full programmability features, providing flexibility in system design.
The WM8782 is an ideal choice for applications such as telecommunications, consumer electronics, medical equipment, test and measurement, automotive, industrial, and consumer audio. It is also suitable for a variety of consumer and professional audio applications, including CD and DVD players, MP3 and videotape players, and radio and television broadcasting equipment.
