Working Principle

The WM8983GEFL/RV audio codec contains both an A/D and a D/A converter which can be interfaced to one or more processors. Audio signals are converted between the analog and digital domains by the A/D and D/A converters, respectively. The codec also contains a high-performance stereo audio system which can be configured to support a variety of audio formats and signal processing functions. This includes a dual channel mux/demux, which is used to connect multiple audio input and output signals to external transceivers. The codec is also integrated with a mini DSP module which can be used to further improve the audio performance.

The codec is designed to operate from a single voltage source of +3.3V or +5V. It is capable of consuming less than 0.9mW of active power in suspended mode and less than 20mA in active mode. Its power control system incorporates several intelligent power management techniques for optimal power savings. The parts are also available in a small LQFP128 package (18mm x 10.2mm x 3.2mm), which makes them well suited for space-constrained applications.
