Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are complex networks consisting of multiple sensor nodes interconnected by short-range low-power wireless communication networks. WSNs are well-known for their low power consumption, stability, low cost and easy configuration. WSNs are widely used in many application areas, including industrial, medical, military, surveillance, environmental monitoring, multimedia communication and so on. WSNs have been increasingly used in distributed applications due to their fast response, high accuracy and wide coverage. The application field of WSNs is so wide and the requirements for their working principles vary from one application to another.The working principle of WSNs is mainly based on the use of sensor nodes. Each sensor node is equipped with a sensing unit in order to measure the required parameters from the environment. The sensing unit can measure temperature, humidity, pressure, light, sound and so on depending upon the application area. The sensor node also contains a processing unit and a communication unit. The processing unit processes the data from the sensing unit and sends the resulting data to the communication unit. The communication unit sends the data to the nearby nodes or a central base station. The base station processes the data and makes decisions accordingly.Once the sensor node is deployed, it will start working autonomously and continuously monitor and collect data. It will also communicate the data to the base station which in turn will process the collected data and generate necessary responses. By using various algorithms, the base station can detect or predict various anomalies in the monitored environment such as object detection, movement detection, fire, gas and so on.WSNs can also be used for distributed monitoring and control systems. In such systems, the sensor nodes are deployed at different locations and communicate with each other using the communication links. The nodes form a logical network of nodes and exchange data according to the designed protocols. The data is processed by each node and the necessary decisions are taken. The nodes are usually used to monitor and control various fault-tolerant applications such as detection systems, location tracking systems and so on.Finally, WSNs are also used for event driven applications. In this type of applications, the sensor nodes detect certain events based on the predefined patterns. The events can include temperature change, motion detection, gas detection and so on. The nodes can detect such events and take necessary actions to prevent any harm. For example, in medical applications, the sensor nodes can detect potential fatal events such as heart attack or stroke and automatically inform the medical personnel.Thus, WSNs can be used in a wide range of application areas depending upon the requirements. The working principle of WSNs is mainly based on the use of distributed sensor nodes which act as the eyes and ears of the network. The sensor nodes collect data from the environment and send it to the base station. The base station processes the data and makes necessary decisions and actions. WSNs are useful for distributed monitoring and control systems, location tracking systems and event detection systems.
