Thyristors are semiconductor devices consisting of four layers of alternating n-type and p-type materials. They can block or pass current depending on their applied voltage and so they may be used as switches, rectifiers, voltage limiters and phase control devices. SCRs or Silicon Controlled Rectifiers are a type of thyristor. The XO405MF 1AA2 SCR is an industrial device with an average blocking voltage of 1200V, a surge voltage of 2000V, a current rating of 25A and a controlling power of 900 watts.

SCRs are made up of four layers of p-n junction, which are connected to three leads; the gate, cathode and anode. When the anode-cathode voltage is applied, current will not flow through the SCR until a positive gate trigger pulse is given to the gate terminal. This causes the the SCR to switch on and current passes through the device until the anode-cathode voltage is removed or the current flow through the SCR falls below a certain level.

The SCR can be used in any device that requires a large, continuous load current and requires cyclic on and off control. Common application fields include rectifying, current control, AC motor control, speed control and power factor correction. SCRs are also useful in static switches, crowbar circuits and lamp or heater control applications.

In rectifying applications, the SCR are used as synchronous rectifiers and are crossed-coupled with other rectifiers to provide a rectified output with very good power factor. SCRs may also be used to control the flow of alternating current in AC motor drives, speed controls and lamp dimmers. In this case, the longer the gate pulse duration is, the more power is delivered to the load. The SCR provides an excellent method for controlling power delivery to loads.

In static switches, the SCR can be used to trigger other two-terminal devices. When a positive trigger pulse is applied to the gate terminal, the SCR quickly switches the circuits from the off to on state, thereby triggering the other two-terminal device. This switch-on operation is incredibly fast and so it can be used in power switching applications. SCRs are also useful in crowbar circuits and over-current protection circuits where they can be used to ‘crowbar’ the circuit if it reaches an over current state.

Finally, SCRs are useful in lamp applications such as light dimmers. In these applications, the SCR can be used to control the average power and dim the lamp so that it can be set at whatever brightness is desired. Therefore, SCRs can be used to control the phase and power of AC waveforms in a wide range of industrial applications.
