The X28HC64J-90 is a 64K-bit, non-volatile, low power, CMOS Electrically Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM) designed for a wide range of military, consumer and commercial applications. The device employs a 9-bit address bus which allows up to 512 words/256 bytes of code or data storage.

The X28HC64J-90 uses two supply voltages, VDD (5.0V ±10%) and Vpp (13V). VDD is the primary supply that powers the IC and its associated circuitry. Vpp is used to program the device during the write cycle. Because of this, the X28HC64J-90 can be reprogrammed an infinite number of times.

The X28HC64J-90 offers two modes of operation: the external write mode and the internal write mode. In the external write mode, programming of the memory is achieved by applying write signals to the pins marked W and WP. The write cycle requires that Vpp be applied to pin Vpp/CE while VDD is applied to the VDD pin. As data is written to the memory, internal word and byte controls prevent the writing of any data to protected areas. Writing the data at room temperature reduces the programming time for each word.

In the internal write mode, programming is performed by supplying Vpp and toggling the programming enable pin (PCE) for each memory word. This mode allows for faster programming of the X28HC64J-90 but at the anti-tamper cost of not being able to detect word/byte control errors. The X28HC64J-90 also has another protection feature built in called "Range Lock" which prevents unwanted address or data changes by protecting the address spaces selected by two external pins.

The X28HC64J-90 is well suited for a wide array of applications, such as non-volatile memory storage, data logging, programmable logic, memory expansion, and code into computer products.
