Working Principle

The basic operating principle of a linear voltage regulator involves a series of current-limiting transistors, resistors and capacitors. The voltage regulator consists of two transistors, a PNP and an NPN. The PNP transistor\'s base is connected to the output voltage reference. The emitter forms the positive terminal of the output voltage and is connected to the resistor and capacitor combination. The NPN transistor is connected in a complementary fashion and its collector is connected to the ground. This forms the negative terminal of the output voltage.

A reference voltage of 5V is applied to the base of the PNP transistor as a control signal. This reference voltage is also connected to the capacitor. The current flows from the power supply, outputting to the load and raising the output voltage. In this way, the voltage regulator compares the output voltage to the reference voltage and adjusts the current accordingly, reducing the output voltage variation, which makes the voltage regulator to provide a stable output voltage.
