XR46110IHBTR - PMIC - LED Drivers

The XR46110IHBTR is a 5A or 6A step-down DC/DC converter and a 3A linear regulator in a single package. This integrated PMIC – LED driver is designed for driving multiple high-brightness LEDs. The XR46110IHBTR integrates the industry’s most advanced high-efficiency switching regulator and a high accuracy low-dropout linear regulator in one device. The integrated components have been designed to reduce design complexity and minimize the required area.

Application Field

The XR46110IHBTR can be used in many positive and negative LED applications, including outdoor illumination, chemical and medical equipment, general lighting, automotive lighting, and street lighting. This PMIC – LED driver can be used to drive a single LED string up to 36 W with up to 10 LEDs, typically in 6 Series strings.

Working Principle

The integrated DC/DC converter operates as a synchronous buck converter. It includes a high-side MOSFET and a low-side MOSFET, both of which switch at a frequency of 2.2 MHz. The MOSFETs can handle 6V at the output, thus allowing the device to drive multiple LEDs with a wide input range of 4.5 V to 36 V. The integrated linear regulator works as a current source. It can be configured to enable a wide range of current levels (25mA to 3A) for multiple LEDs in a single string.The XR46110IHBTR also includes an adaptive voltage control loop, which maintains the output voltage to drive high brightness LEDs with a wide operating range from 7 V to 36 V. The adaptive voltage control loop consists of an Error Amplifier, a PWM Comparator, and an error detector. The Error Amplifier adjusts the output voltage on the basis of the feedback voltage from the error detector at the output and hence helps maintain the constant voltage output for the LEDs.The XR46110IHBTR includes a slew rate control circuit to ensure stability of the DC/DC converter. The slew rate control circuit also helps prevent large current spikes and therefore reduces stress on the LED driver output stage. In addition, the XR46110IHBTR can be configured depending on the operating temperature range and LED future variations to ensure user safety while keeping the LED brightness within desired limits. Finally, the XR46110IHBTR also includes a Power OK indicator to notify the user when the device is powered on, and an Over Temperature protection.
