• Working Principle:

  A Zener diode is a kind of diode which permits current flow in the forward direction like a regular diode, but also in the reverse direction if the voltage is larger than the breakdown voltage known as Zener voltage.

  When a Zener diode is used in a circuit, the Zener voltage (Vz) is adjusted so that in the forward bias the diode is just about to turn on. When the forward voltage is less than the Zener voltage, the diode does not conduct; but when the forward voltage is equal to or greater than the Zener voltage, the diode will act as an ordinary diode and permit current to flow in the forward direction.

  When the reverse voltage is increased further, at a certain point known as the reverse breakdown voltage, the diode’s current starts to increase rapidly. The diode is working in the breakdown region and the voltage across it stays nearly constant at the Zener voltage (Vz) as the current through it increases.

  The Zener diode is used in various circuits to provide a constant voltage reference, such as a voltage regulator, wave shaper, or clamp circuit.
