Working Principle of ZL8101ALAF

The ZL8101ALAF adopts the current mode control technique, which gives improved transient response and higher efficiency compared to conventional voltage control methods. This is achieved by monitoring the output current through a current sensing circuit, and then comparing the sensed current to an internal reference. To enable a wide dynamic range, the sensed current is multiplied by an internal voltage than can either be adjusted externally or automatically set to the Vcc voltage.

The device can be used to build high efficiency buck, boost or flyback converters. The output regulation loop consists of a voltage error amplifier (Vref), a current sense amplifier (Vsen), and a power output stage with two N-FETs; Rf and Rr are external pulses.

The power output stage is driven by a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal generator. This signal generator employs a triangular oscillator, an integrator, several comparators and logical arithmetic. The triangular oscillator generates a periodic signal; this signal is compared with the output of the offset-compensated integrator. The result of this comparison is the PWM signal, which is then used to drive the power output stage.

The voltage error amplifier operates in the following manner: the error voltage is sampled and compared with an adjustable reference voltage which is then amplified and adjusted by external components, thereby controlling the current through the power output stage. The current sense amplifier works in a similar way, except that it monitors the sensed current through the load and compares it to an adjustable reference current. The output of the current sense amplifier is then amplified and regulated, thus controlling the output of the power output stage.

The ZL8101ALAF device provides many protection features such as short circuit protection and over-voltage protection. Short-circuit protection is provided by an external P-channel FET and an internal comparator. When the sense voltage exceeds the measure threshold, the FET is triggered and the output is turned off.

Over-voltage protection is provided by an external P-channel FET and an internal voltage comparator. When the output voltage exceeds a certain value, the FET is triggered and the output is turned off. Finally, the protection circuits are completed with over current protection, thermal protection, and lock detection.
