Working Principle
The variable capacitance of varicaps is due to the tunneling effect, which occurs when electrons tunnel through the barrier of the varicap at low voltages and higher voltages, respectively. The gate-source voltage will affect the p-n junction’s tunneling effect and cause an increase or decrease in the ratio of the junction’s capacitance to the total depletion width. The varicap’s junction capacitance is inversely proportional to the gate-source applied voltage. This means that it will decrease when the voltage is increased and vice versa.
