The TVS diode, also referred to as transient voltage suppressor, a is solid state device designed to protect electronic circuits from voltage transients. The SMCJ24A is a bidirectional, low capacitance TVS diode device that is used for protecting data lines from damaging transients. This device is used in a variety of industrial, automotive, and consumer applications.
The SMCJ24A TVS diode consists of two distinct sections; a Zener and a transient clamp. The Zener diode is a reverse biased diode with a breakdown voltage that is designed to protect against overvoltage conditions. The transient clamp section of the diode consists of an internal diode network that provide a clamping point for fast voltage transients. Both of these sections are in series with each other and form a bi-directional protection diode.
The SMCJ24A TVS diode is rated for a peak power of 600 W, a clamping voltage of 24 V, and can handle operating voltage range of 6 V to 36 V. This device\'s low capacitance provides an excellent protection solution for high-speed data lines and can sustain repetitive peak pulse power up to 1500 W. While this device is designed for transient voltage protection, it can also be used for over-voltage protection in some applications.
The working principle of the SMCJ24A TVS diode begins in the reverse biased Zener diode section. In this configuration, current can only flow from the anode (cathode) to the cathode (anode) when the reverse bias voltage is greater than the breakdown of the Zener section. When the reverse voltage reaches the breakdown of the Zener section, the Zener diode will clamp the voltage, thus limiting the over-voltage condition to the breakdown voltage of the device.
The transient clamp is designed to handle fast-rising transient voltage pulses and quickly clamp the voltage to a predetermined value. This section consists of a network of internal diodes that are connected to the Zener diode section. As the rise time of the voltage increases, the internal diodes start to conduct and begin to clamp the voltage, thus protecting it from further voltage rises.
The SMCJ24A TVS diode is an excellent choice for protecting sensitive circuits from transient voltages and power surges in a variety of scenarios. It is used in applications such as automotive electronics, consumer electronics, industrial electronics, and data communications. It is an ideal component for high speed data line protection, and can be used for both overvoltage and transient protection applications.
