What are the nature and application of monostable flip-flops?

Most of the signals in the digital circuits of pulse generation and shaping circuits are rectangular pulse signals.

There are two main methods to obtain the rectangular pulse signal : one is to generate the periodic rectangular pulse signal directly by using the multivibrator circuit, this circuit is called the pulse generation circuit; the other is to transform the existing pulse signal into the desired rectangular pulse signal by using the pulse signal transformation circuit, which does not generate the pulse signal, and just play the role of pulse waveform transformation, this circuit is also known as pulse shaping circuit. The monostable flip-flops is one of the pulse shaping circuit.

1. The nature and application of monostable flip-flops

( 1 ) The properties of monostable flip-flops, time delay, timing pulse circuit, with the trigger input, whenever the edge of the trigger signal is valid, the monostable trigger will output a width of one a certain rectangular pulse with a certain amplitude.

The monostable flip-flop has two working states, namely, steady state and transient state. The state before the trigger signal is steady, and the state after applying the trigger signal is transient. The monostable flip-flop can flip from the steady state to the transient state under the action of an external trigger pulse. After a period of transient maintenance, it is automatically returned to the steady state without additional control signals. The duration of the transient is the size of the pulse width of the monostable flip-flop, which depends only on the parameters of the circuit itself, and has nothing to do with the trigger pulse. The transient of the monostable flip-flop is maintained by the charging and discharging process of the RC circuit. If the monostable trigger can be triggered again with the trigger signal in the transient state, the transient duration can be extended, which is called the ability to retrigger, otherwise, it can't be triggered again.

( 2 ) Application of monostable trigger

1 ) for shaping. Since the amplitude and width of the output pulse of the monostable flip-flop are determined, an irregular pulse train of width and amplitude can be used, shaping a certain pulse train of width and amplitude.

2 ) For timing.

Since the monostable flip-flop can generate a rectangular output pulse with a certain width of TW, this pulse is used to control other circuits to make it move ( or not ) within time t, that will play a regular role.

3 ) For delay.

Assuming that the subsequent circuits need to be triggered using the falling edge, the output  of the monostable flip-flop . The falling edge is more than the input signal ; the falling edge is lagging behind the TW, which achieves the function of delay.
