What is a multivibrator?

Multivibrator is a self-excited oscillator that produces rectangular pulse waves.

The rectangular wave oscillator is also called a multivibrator because of its rich harmonics.

The multivibrator has no steady state, and does not need an external trigger signal. When the power is turned on, the output of the rectangular wave can be generated automatically. Similar to other types of oscillators, a multivibrator requires positive feedback, in a variety of forms.

As in the multivibrator, the oscillation frequency depends mainly on the time required for the gate circuit to rise to the threshold level ( threshold level ), and the circuit is vulnerable to fluctuations in the supply voltage, external interference, temperature changes, so the stability of the frequency can not be very high.

Because the quartz crystal oscillator (abbreviated as crystal oscillator) is not only stable in frequency characteristic, but also with high quality factor and excellent frequency selection characteristic, the quartz crystal oscillator is commonly used in multi harmonic oscillator to stabilize frequency. The output frequency of this multi harmonic oscillator is equal to the natural frequency of quartz crystal.

Besides the multi harmonic oscillator circuit composed of quartz crystal oscillator, there is also a commercialized active crystal oscillator.

The quartz crystal oscillator and oscillating circuit are integrated inside the active crystal oscillator. Only the active crystal oscillator is supplied to the active crystal oscillator, and the output terminal can output very stable rectangular pulse.
