How to Identify True and Fake Electronic Components

Today in the market you can see thousands of millions of electronic components, with no knack  you are almost not able to recognize the difference between the true and fake ones. Here will introduct several methods to help you identify the true components.

1. See if the surface of the integrated circuit chip has been polished

The polished surface of the chip will have fine lines or even micro-marks of the previous printing, and some cover the surface of the chip with a thin layer of paint, it looks a little shiny, without the texture of silicone.

2. Look at the printing

The vast majority of today's chips are laser-marked or printed on dedicated chip printers. They are clearly legible, unobtrusive, unambiguous, and difficult to erase. The retreaded chip is either “sawtoothed” due to corrosion by the cleaning agent on the edge of the writing, or it is blurred in print, has different shades, is not positioned properly, is easily erased or is too prominent. In addition, the screen printing process of the current IC manufacturers have long been eliminated, but many chip renewal because of cost reasons still use screen printing process, which is also one of the basis for judgment. The silk screen printing words will be slightly higher than the chip surface. When you touch it you can feel the slightest uneven or astringent.

However, it should be noted that due to the recent sharp decrease in the price of small laser marking machines, more and more refurbished ICs adopt laser marking, and some new films will also use this method to change the word mark or simply replay to improve the chip. In terms of grades, this requires extra attention, and it is difficult to distinguish methods. The main method is to look at the overall coordination, the handwriting and the background, the oldness of the pin is not the same as the possibility of new, too clear and problematic. But the chips manufactured by many small factories, especially certain small domestic IC companies are born of these, which adds a lot of trouble for the identification, but the judgment of the mainstream manufacturers’ chip is still very meaningful.

In addition, the use of laser marking machines to modify chip marks has become more and more frequent, especially in memory and on some high-end chips. Once it is found that there are individual letters in the location of laser printing, and the pen thickness is uneven, it can be determined as “Remark”.

3. Look at the pins

Where the bright as "new" tinned pins will be refurbished, the majority of the pins of the goods IC should be the so-called silver powder feet, the color is dark but uniform color, the surface should not have oxidation traces. In addition, the pins of DIP and other plug-ins should not have any traces of scratches. Even if they are (repacked), the scratches should also be neat, in the same direction, and the metal exposed should be clean and free from oxidation.

4. See the device production date and packaging plant marking

The label of the genuine goods including labels on the bottom surface of the chips should be consistent and the production time is consistent with the device's quality, while the labels of the refurbishment chips without Remark are confusing and the production time is not the same. Although Remark's chips have the same number of positive labels, sometimes the values are unreasonable (such as the marked "gimmy number") or the date of manufacture does not match the device's specifications. If the labels at the bottom of the device are confusing, it means that the device is Remark.

5. Measure device thickness and see device edges

Many of the original laser-printed burnished fins (most power devices) must be polished deeper because the original mark must be removed, so that the overall thickness of the device will be significantly smaller than the normal size. However, people who are generally inexperienced are not compared or measured by calipers. It is difficult to distinguish, but there is a change in the general knowledge of the law, that is, to see the front edge of the device. Because the plastic sealing device must be "released" after injection molding, the edge angle of the device is rounded (R angle), but the size is not large. It is easy to grind this fillet to a right angle when grinding, so when the front edge of the device is right angle, it can be judged as polished goods.

In addition, there is another way to see whether the business has a large number of original packaging materials, including the identification of the inside and outside the same carton, anti-static plastic bags, etc. The actual identification should be used in multiple methods, if one problem is found, the quality of the device can be identified. If we have to write a chip, we can't judge it with eyes and experience. We can use a writing tool such as a magnifying glass and a digital magnifying glass to polish a chip table that has been refurbished. There are tiny holes that we can't see with the naked eye. We must rely on equipment to observe! There are several points:

1), Look at the typing. Generally the re-typing (white letter) for the refurbished goods can be erased with chemical thinners can era, but the original goods can not wipe off.

2) Looking at lead angles. The pins of the original goods are very neat and like a straight line, while some of the refurbished handles are not neat and somewhat embarrassing.

3) Look at the positioning holes. Observing the positioning holes of the original goods, you can find they are relatively consistent. But some of the refurbishments have different shades of depth. Even if they are really polished, if you look closely, you can see the traces of the original positioning holes. In the actual work, we must also observe carefully. Some falsification processes are quite high. We must be especially careful in purchasing.
