Renesas Electronics Corporation today announced the introduction of the 32-bit motor control microcontroller (mcu) RX72T series with dedicated hardware accelerator IP to perform the complex, high-speed operations required for motor control in robotics and other industrial equipment. The RX72T Series delivers superior performance with a 1160 CoreMark score in the EEMBC® benchmark– the highest level of 5V MCU running at 200 MHz.

The RX72T series brings leading performance, built-in IP, security and encryption capabilities and advanced control capabilities to our extensive MCU product line optimized for industrial robotics and motor control,” said by the vice president of Renesas Electronics Industrial Automation. The new product expands the convenient migration path for the RX series and opens up new possibilities for extremely low cost design in compact industrial robots. We are pleased to be able to drive the deployment of these applications to enhance production in industrial environments effectiveness."

Key features of the RX72T series MCU

With the increasing use of servo systems, the demand for compact industrial robots is also increasing. In order to achieve the complex motion required by industrial robots, high precision control of the position, direction, speed and torque of the motor is required.

The RX72T MCU includes dedicated accelerator hardware for high-speed position and speed control calculations required to achieve servo motor control in compact industrial robots. The current control loop operation can be completed in less than 1.5μs, so the user can choose to develop the servo system independently, and only the ready-made servo system can be purchased before.

Performing operations in software can take a long time to calculate; however, a completely hardware-based approach can have an impact on flexibility, making it difficult for users to implement specific control operations. The RX72T MCU solves this problem by performing single-precision floating-point trigonometric functions (sin, cos, arctan, hypot) and register bank save functions in the hardware as a dedicated IP, which not only ensures flexibility, but also speeds up the operation; In addition, the register bank save function improves the speed and accuracy of interrupt processing and the computational performance of the device. The MCU also includes a 200 MHz PWM inverter control timer for up to 4-channel 3-phase control, 2-channel 5-phase control, or 10-channel single-phase control.

Customers using Renesas Electronics e-AI fault detection solutions can use it with the new RX72T MCU to increase productivity. Characteristic data (current and speed values) characterizing the motor state can be directly used for motor control and e-AI based fault detection via a single MCU. The MCU also features hardware-based system fault protection and a hardware encryption module for encryption/decryption of communication data.

Renesas Electronics offers sensorless vector control and encoder vector control programs, Renesas Motor Workbench 2.0 for real-time debugging, and the RX72T cpu card for 24 V motor control evaluation kits.

With this new RX72T MCU family, Renesas Electronics offers system manufacturers a line of 5V motor control MCUs with the highest level of software compatibility, from new high-end MCUs to RX23T (40 MHz), RX24T (80 MHz) And the smooth migration path of the RX66T (160 MHz) MCU and provides design flexibility in the RX MCU environment. The RX72T family is also fully compatible with the RX66T family of RXv3 cores.
