What are the types and role of solder resist?

1. Type of solder resist.

Solder resists are classified into thermal curing and photo curing.

The advantages of heat curing solder resists are strong adhesion and high temperature resistance. The disadvantage is that the curing time is long and the temperature is high, which easily deforms the printed circuit board.

The advantage of the light curing solder resist is that the curing speed is fast, and it can be completed in 2~3 minutes under the irradiation of the high pressure lamp, which is beneficial to improve the production efficiency and can be used for automatic production; the disadvantage is that the solder resist is easily soluble in alcohol. It may be compatible with the alcohol-containing flux sprayed on the printed circuit board, which may affect the quality of the board.

2.The role of solder resist.

On the printed circuit board, a solder resist is often applied to the printed lines outside the pad. When wave soldering or soldering is performed, the solder is not soldered to other parts of the board except the pad, which reduces bridging. The occurrence of the tipping phenomenon improves the quality of the soldering, saves a large amount of solder, and the solder resist itself has a certain hardness, forming a protective film on the surface of the printed board to protect the copper foil.
