What is the basic principle of phosphor luminescence?

This article describes the basic principle of phosphor luminescence.

Although the process of phosphor luminescence is complex, its basic principle is same as other photoluminescence materials, have undergone a physical change process.

That is, the external energy is absorbed by the matrix lattice or the activator of the luminous center, the absorbed energy is transferred from the matrix lattice to the activator, the electron of the activator ion transitions to the excited state level, and the activated activator returns to the ground state level. This completes the luminous process. In the field of LEDs, phosphors are mainly used on white LEDs.

When the doped ions return to the ground state, the energy is released in the following three ways.

1.The excited energy is transferred to the nearby lattice in the form of "non-radiative relaxation", which consumes energy in the form of heat.

2.When the excitation energy is transformed into photons and the energy is converted by radiation, the phenomenon of "luminous" appears.

3.The excitation energy is transferred from the activator ion to the activator ion, and all or part of the energy absorbed by the activator ion can emit light from the activator ion.
