1.5SMC15A is a type of unidirectional transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode designed for protecting sensitive electronic equipment from transient over-voltage. Typical applications for the 1.5SMC15A include electrical power supplies, motor control, industrial controllers, electronic circuits and motor drivers. The 1.5SMC15A belongs to a family of TVS technology that combines the protection characteristics of low capacitance and low leakage with high peak pulse current capabilities and low clamping voltage. It is suitable for protecting electronic circuits against voltage transients induced by lightning and other transient voltage events such as switching inductive loads.

The working principle of the 1.5SMC15A is to absorb transient over-voltages or electrical spikes quickly and coerce them to a safe level of operating voltage. When a transient voltage exceeds the limit or rating of the device, the TVS diode quickly conducts a large current, thereby reducing the entire voltage spike. While one diode is doing this, the other diagonal diode maintains the current path and therefore, no power is dissipated. The voltage protecting capability is achieved by the voltage dependent diode characteristics of the device as opposed to the conventional R/C snubber approach where losses are generated due to the voltage drop on the pan resistor.

The 1.5SMC15A series of TVS diodes consist of a Silicon Oxide-Nitride-Oxide (SiON) planar diode encapsulated in an axial package with leads for surface mounting. These chips provide excellent on-state resistance with uniform breakdown voltage, making them suitable for a wide range of applications where extreme over-voltage protection is required. The 1.5SMC15A series is available in 12, 16, 24 and 32 V breakdown ratings offering a low leakage current, repeatable protection and 8/20 μs operating waveforms. The devices are hermetically sealed for reliable operation and they have an ESD rating of 3 kV.

The 1.5SMC15A series of TVS diodes are designed to protect circuits against fast voltage transients in electronic devices such as computers, servers, and other high-speed devices. The low capacitance of the device allows for the devices to absorb a considerable amount of over-voltage or high-energy pulses without producing high voltage spikes during steady-state periods. This makes the 1.5SMC15A an ideal choice for protecting electronic components from electrical transients such as lightning and inductive surges in an automotive environment.
