:TVS diodes are widely used in data and power line protection, ESD (Electro-Static Discharge ) and lightning protection applications. The 1.5SMC180CA, one of the best-known and most widely used TVS devices, is designed to provide bidirectional protection for analog and digital lines in 10V to 400V DC range being particularly effective in automotive, telecom, and industrial applications.
The 1.5SMC180CA offers industry-standard package and superior reverse breakdown voltage, peak power capabilities, low clamping voltage, and average power dissipation. It therefore provides superior surge protection for reliable operation of protected devices. The device also provides protection from power and avalanche induced surges, as well as electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Working Principle
television suppressors (TVS) are Zener diodes with avalanche capabilities. Normal Zener diodes only work if the reverse bias voltage is equal to or greater than their Zener voltage.TVS diodes only conduct in the reverse direction when the reverse bias voltage reaches a certain threshold level.
When the reverse bias voltage reaches the breakdown voltage or Zener voltage of a TVS diode, a breakdown event occurs and an avalanche current surges. The avalanche current generates several thousand watts of peak power and increases the breakdown voltage significantly.
The avalanche voltage slowly rises until the diode can no longer maintain it. The avalanche voltage is the clamping voltage of the device, and when the reverse bias voltage is reduced, the diode snaps back to its original state.
The 1.5SMC180CA offers bidirectional protection capabilities, which means that it can protect both sides of the protected device or line, irrespective of the polarity of the applied voltage. During transients, the 1.5SMC180CA will become conductive in either direction depending on the magnitude of the voltage.
The 1.5SMC180CA provides fast response to voltage transients and is capable of handling peak power dissipation of up to 400W under a variety of conditions. It is designed for fast and reliable protection, with excellent clamping performance, low leakage, and low signal attenuation.
